Wagon Sets

There are many ways how a set of wagons can be designed. Here we show several ways how it can be achieved that all current and future cargos can be transported with at least one wagon. We will attempt this with as few exceptions from the class system as possible.

There are certain situations where you can decide whether a cargo should be transportable in multiple wagons (in following called "permissive") or in only one wagon (in following called "restrictive") at the same time.

A rule of thumb is: Every class should appear at least once in the OR mask, and use the AND NOT mask sparsely. If a class appears in the AND NOT mask, then it should appear once in an OR mask with an empty AND NOT mask, otherwise you risk circular exclusions.

For example, if one wagon has an OR mask of "Liquid", and an AND NOT mask of "Air Freight", and another wagon has an OR mask of "Air Freight", and an AND NOT mask of "Liquid", then neither of the wagons is refittable to BEER.

Small Set

The small set contains only 5 different wagons, and is especially representative for early railways (before 1900), when the development of specialised wagons was not necessary or possible yet.

Wagon Permissive Restrictive
OR Mask AND NOT Mask Exceptions OR Mask AND NOT Mask Exceptions
Passenger 0001 Passengers 0000 - 0001 Passengers 0000 -
Mail 000E Mail, Air Freight, Armored 0000 - 000A Mail, Armored 0000 -
Open 1C34 Air Freight, Piece Goods, Bulk, Oversized, Powderized, Not Pourable 0080 Refrigerated - 1C10 Bulk, Oversized, Powderized, Not Pourable 0000 +WOOD, +STEL
Closed 0036 Mail, Air Freight, Piece Goods, Refrigerated 0400 Oversized -WOOD, -STEL 000E Air Freight, Piece Goods, Refrigerated 0400 Oversized -WOOD, -STEL
Tank 0040 Liquid 0000 - 0040 Liquid 0000 -

Large Set

The large set contains all wagons of the small set, plus some specialized wagons for some cargos/classes.

Wagon Permissive Restrictive
OR Mask AND NOT Mask Exceptions OR Mask AND NOT Mask Exceptions
Passenger 0001 Passengers 0000 - 0001 Passengers 0000 -
Mail 000E Mail, Air Freight, Armored 0000 - 000A Mail, Armored 0000 -
Open 1034 Air Freight, Piece Goods, Bulk, Not Pourable 0C80 Refrigerated, Oversized, Powderized - 1010 Bulk, Not Pourable 0800 Powderized -
Hopper 0010 Bulk 1800 Not Pourable, Powderized - 0010 Bulk 1800 Not Pourable, Powderized -
Silo 0800 Powderized 0000 - 0800 Powderized 0000 -
Stake 0424 Air Freight, Piece Goods, Oversized 0080 Refrigerated - 0400 Oversized 0000 +WOOD, +STEL
Closed 0036 Mail, Air Freight, Piece Goods 0480 Oversized, Refrigerated -WOOD, -STEL 0024 Air Freight, Piece Goods 0480 Oversized, Refrigerated -WOOD, -STEL
Refrigerated 0080 Refrigerated 0000 - 0080 Refrigerated 0000 -
Tank 0040 Liquid 0000 - 0040 Liquid 0000 -

A scheme like this can easily be extended by other specialized wagons, e.g. for livestock (LVST) or car (VEHI) transport. For this, just leave the classes empty, and add the cargo via the refit mask.
